18 “Everyone who divorces his wife, and marries another, commits adultery. He who marries one who is divorced from a husband commits adultery.”
Jesus specifically says in Matthew that you can get divorced in cases of adultery. Also, Paul discusses in his letter to the Corinthians other situations in which a married person is free to remarry after divorce, situations he implies that Jesus didn’t address here; many think Jesus is referring only to the situation of a believer married to another believer. Also, Jesus died to forgive our sins, so no matter what we have done, there is always mercy for those who repent. Lastly, I’ve written about divorce at length in my other, longer blog: Are you toast if you get divorced?
p.s. in the spirit of this verse, I suggest you read The Love Dare. Here’s Dare #1: Love is Patient: For the next day, resolve to demonstrate patience and say nothing negative at all to the one you dare to love. If the temptation arises, choose not to say anything. Please let us know what happens! xo
